What is ratio?

In mathematics, ratio is a ratio of two numbers of the same kind (eg objects, persons, students, spoons, proportions of whatever identical dimension). Usually, this is expressed as "a to b" or a: b, sometimes it is expressed as a dimension explicit indicating how many times the first number contains the other (not necessarily an integer).

Simply put, we can simply say "In the amount of one thing, it's X of another thing". Let's take an example; Imagine that we have 8 oranges and 6 lemons in a bowl of fruit, the ratio of oranges and lemons would be 4: 3 (which is equivalent to 8: 6) and the relationship between lemons and oranges would be 3: 4. In addition, the ratio of oranges to the total amount of fruit is 4:07 (equivalent to 8:14). The ratio 4: 7 can be further converted into a fraction of 4/7 to represent how much of the fruit an orange is.
